Yoga Therapy Explained

“Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga” – International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) definition.

It is usually delivered in either a private one-on-one or small group session.  Yoga therapy can adapt the practice of yoga to the needs of people with specific or persistent health problems not usually addressed in a group class.

How We Can Help You

No yoga experience is needed to benefit from yoga therapy.  It can assist in a wide range of circumstances. Some common examples include:

Recovery from injury

Recent health diagnoses e.g arthritis

Wellness during ongoing illness

Chronic/persistent pain

Private introduction to yoga

Gentle movement after a period of inactivity

Stress management through mindfulness

Boost confidence & motivation

Private Sessions

A yoga therapist assists the person rather than focusing on the condition.  To do that, they use a combination of techniques including:

  • Yoga poses
  • Breathing techniques
  • Meditation
  • Lifestyle counselling
  • Self-development guidance

Each person receives an assessment and then a tailored practice based on their own needs. Yoga therapy is not just a short-term treatment but a long-term lifestyle option. It develops self-awareness & empowerment to promote lasting change.

After an assessment, you will be given a personalised plan to practice at home.  Most people come for a few appointments and then continue in their own time.  Many feel confident to join one of our friendly group classes.

Our yoga therapists work with other health professionals and have a local network to refer on to.

What Our Lovely Clients Have to Say

Post-Cancer Regaining Confidence I remain very grateful to you, talk about it and recommend it to others. The sessions were exactly what I needed to return to some confidence in my body’s ability after a long period of serious ill health. I also remember very clearly you indicating a point in between my shoulder blades, and for the first time I got a neurocognitive map of my body from front through to back at that point. To clarify, I could mentally identify and move my chest and my back, but somehow what you did helped me “get” the whole pathway. Since that time I’ve returned to dancing and currently take seven classes a week, have had a professional dance gig (in my 60s!!!!) and danced several times at the Crown Theatre. The sessions with you were brilliant and my first steps through to a restored confidence and full occupation and enjoyment of my own body.

Simple, Empowering & Life-changing There have been days when just a simple breathing technique has got me through a difficult meeting/ thought process/moment of stress when I needed calm or even getting off to sleep!!
Your sessions have been wonderful in centering my soul, reminding me of the practice of mindfulness and just being grateful for ‘being’ and still being able to breathe!!!! Not to mention the physical benefits of yoga practice.... I NEED to care for my heart and mind, move my body and maintain that strength joint mobility as I know I have to have that for my overall mental wellbeing. I really can’t thank you enough as I’m not sure how I would’ve made it through some days. I’d recommend to anyone standing in hesitation to grab this chance. When our path becomes rocky in life, building on/ gaining inner strength, stability, and simple calming practice that can be done anywhere, is empowering and can be life-changing. We don’t need the ‘stuff’ that surrounds our lives to find contentment and peace - we need to go within and find sustainable solutions from the heart & soul.
